In the Ibo District, coastal communities depend almost exclusively on artisanal fishing. This condition makes incomes unstable and increases pressure on fish stocks. The spread of harmful practices, such as trawling, further contributes to the degradation of marine and coastal ecosystems, already severely affected by the impacts of the climate crisis.
At the same time, the lack of scientific data and limited coordination among local institutions make effective resource management difficult.
In this context, it is crucial to promote sustainable economic activities, strengthen local governance, and foster the economic inclusion of women and young people.
We engage public institutions, research centres, and local communities in the sustainable management of natural resources through an integrated and participatory approach.
Community Fisheries Councils are reinforced, and training activities and technical support are provided to improve coordination and the capacities of local institutions in managing coastal resources.
Diversifying the income sources of coastal communities is essential to relieve pressure on marine resources. For this reason, we support income-generating initiatives and strengthen technical and entrepreneurial skills, with particular attention to the inclusion of women and young people.
Through training and technical support, we encourage the adoption of more selective and low-impact fishing techniques.
To improve knowledge of coastal ecosystems and support informed decision-making, we promote scientific activities and research in specific areas such as biodiversity, microplastic pollution, and sustainable aquaculture practices.
In Ibo, the future depends on the sea. Together with local communities, we are working to change course. Through sustainable fishing practices, scientific research, and local economic activities, we build concrete solutions alongside those who live in this territory every day. Protecting marine ecosystems is not only an environmental challenge—it is an essential condition for ensuring stability and future opportunities for coastal communities.
