LOCAL COMMUNITIES ON THE FRONT LINE TO DEFEND NATURE

Although Tanzania has experienced steady economic growth in recent years, deep inequalities persist: 28% of the population still lives below the poverty threshold. Rapid population growth, overexploitation of natural resources, and the impacts of climate change are placing ecosystems and the well-being of communities, especially those in rural areas, at serious risk. These combined pressures also threaten many iconic large mammal species now facing extinction.

Our work in Tanzania

Since 1996, Oikos has worked in the savannahs of northern Tanzania, implementing programs focused on cross-border biodiversity and ecosystem conservation, sustainable natural resource management, and community development.

  • We ensure access to clean drinking water and basic healthcare for remote communities, working closely with local people and institutions. We build water and sanitation infrastructure using local materials and sustainable techniques.
  • We promote small-scale entrepreneurship—particularly among vulnerable women—supporting their journey toward independence and economic empowerment.
  • We address human–wildlife conflict in areas where coexistence between large mammals and farming or pastoralist communities is most challenging. Our approach combines training, sharing of
best practices, and the distribution of tools designed to foster peaceful cohabitation.
  • All our initiatives include education and awareness-raising activities aimed at fostering lasting change

Since 2023, we’ve also been active in Zanzibar. On Pemba Island, we are implementing initiatives to safeguard biodiversity and support communities in waste management and access to clean water and sanitation. We work closely with vulnerable groups, particularly women, to promote the development of sustainable income-generating activities.
