Istituto Oikos is a non-denominational and independent association, founded in Milan in 1996, operating in Europe and Africa to help conserve and sustainably manage the natural resources as tools of social and economic development.

Istituto Oikos collaborates with public and private entities, both international and national, such as ministries, regional and provincial governments, park administrations, scientific institutes, environmental conservation groups and associations and development organisations to define and apply sustainable natural resource management methods and strategies.

In Europe Oikos promotes biodiversity conservation and a rational natural resource use through programmes of analysis, monitoring, planning and land management and environmental training and education activities.
- In Africa, Oikos promotes the sustainable use of natural resources as instrumental in fighting poverty. With this objective, Oikos favours cooperation and partnership of organisations from the north and south of the world, sustains activities of responsible tourism and creates training and education programmes.
- Oikos is a non-profit organisation registered in Italy .
- Oikos is an NGO (non-government organisation) of international cooperation recognised by the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
- Oikos is a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature ( IUCN, now known as the World Conservation Union) and the Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania ( WCST ).
