In Asia, Istituto Oikos works in areas where a very rich environmental heritage cohabits with an extremely high number of people living under the poverty line. In the Gobi desert (between China and Mongolia), the Chon Kemin valley (Kyrgyzstan) and the Mergui archipelago (Myanmar) some unique species (such as the snow leopard and the Siberian ibex) still survive and need urgently to be protected. The uneasy livelihood conditions of local communities have led to the overuse of the natural resources and to the impoverishment of the rich biodiversity that characterize the area.
In this context, Istituto Oikos promotes projects having the purpose of encouraging environment and wildlife conservation, providing technical-scientific, organizational and instrumental support to the authorities responsible for land, environment and fauna management, reducing human impact on ecosystems, supporting local communities in the creation of small business in the environmental sector.
