Mkuru Ecovillage is an initiative that Istituto Oikos realized to support conservation of natural resources and sustainable development in Mkuru, a Maasai village located in North Tanzania, in the northern side of Mount Meru Ecosystem, in the semi-arid areas close to Arusha National Park.
The programme is based on the integration of traditional knowledge of local communities, precisely Maasai pastoralists and Meru agriculturalists, with modern techniques of natural resources management in an area outside the park, where deforestation and unsustainable agricultural and livestock practices are causing environmental degradation, loss of soil and biodiversity, and, ultimately, expansion of poverty.
Mkuru Ecovillage is a model of a new, integrated and ecological approach to environmental conservation, sustainable use of natural resources, rural development and poverty alleviation.
