Environmental degradation in Myanmar

Myanmar is one of the world’s least developed countries: according to the UNDP Human Development Index (2013), it ranks 149 out of 187 countries.
Poverty in rural areas is extreme, particularly among ethnic minorities living in the most remote rural areas. The national economy is mainly based on natural resources exploitation, that is causing severe environmental degradation and, as a result, the impoverishment of the local population.
The project’s area, in the Myeik Archipelago (Tanintharyi region) has a huge and acknowledged environmental and cultural value. However, due to an inadequate management of the territory, the demographic growth of the last 15 years has not been associated with a development of public services and a diversification of the local economy.. The survival of the local communities is infact still based on fishing, but the growing competition on fishing resources has damaged the subsistence fishermen. To face this competition, the adoption of illegal and destructive fishing techniques (trawls, dynamite, etc) is dangerously increasing, thus causing an alarming degradation of marine and coastal resources.

Toward a correct management of the territory

With this project we are improving the sustainable conservation and management of natural resources of the Myeik Archipelago and, in particular, of the Lampi Marine National Park. We are using an integrated approach that combines training of local actors and improvement of basic services - with a focus on disadvantaged groups (such as women, youth, ethnic minorities) - support of the local economy and decrease of environmental degradation, through a correct land planning and management.
The present project represents the natural continuation of past Oikos’ activities that contributed to the definition od a marine park management plan. We are currently committed to implement the plan and activate sustainable economic activities in the ecotourism sector. The combination of a sustainable management of the resources with the promotion of responsible tourism initiatives represents a sustainable solution to the rapid environmental and social degradation of the area.
About 15.000 people live in the Myeik Archipelago, distributed in 20 villages. Three of them are located within the Lampi Marine National Park, that is thus inhabited by 3000 people, of which about 300 are Moken (sea gypsies).
In the three villages located in the Park we are establishing integrated management systems for water and garbage. To improve local hygienic conditions we will build 60 ecological latrines and launch a campaign to raise awareness on the correct use of water and on good hygienic practices.
We also want to offer to local population valid opportunities to access the emerging ecotourism sector by organizing trainings on the following topics: naturalistic and cultural interpretation; hospitality; cleanliness, cooking and craft; entertainment; strengthening of local communities’ skills in the tourism sector.
