The importance of wetlands: fragile and delicate environments

Wetlands such as lakes, rivers, ponds and swamplands are extremely important environments because freshwaters represent a fundamental resource for animals, plants and also human life.
These areas are essential resources for animals and plants reproduction and survival, but they are also very fragile and delicate ecosystems, considered today among the most threatened of the planet. The major threats are directly related to human activities: pollution, drainage, overusage. Furthermore, a relatively recent concern is due to the presence of non-native animals and plants. For instance, the Red-Eared Slider, an American native aquatic species of turtle, is usually bought as a pet when it has still very small dimensions, and consequently it is often abandoned in ponds and lakes when it reaches a cumbersome size. This turtle is in part responsible for the progressive disappearing of the European Pond Turtle, a species considered endangered as it lives in the same environment, unsuccesfully competing with the Red-Eared Slider for food and other resources.

The ecological connection

The Po Valley is one of the Italian areas where natural habitats are more fragmented and often in a poor state of conservation. However, the Plain is characterized by some “isolated” natural areas of great importance for biodiversity, particularly when they are located between large rivers, such as Ticino and Adda. In this context, well preserved wetlands are key resources to provide the connections between rivers. In this way, different aquatic species can spread and colonize new areas. It is very important that wetlands are close to each other in order to create a network where species are able to move and disperse.

The interventions

We selected 9 wetlands whithin the Varese Province, distributed in Valle del Ticino Regional Park, Rile Tenore Olona Local Park and in Cassano Magnago and Albizzate municipalities, where we are going to implement nature restorations interventions. As first step we will perform a survey of flora and fauna that inhabit wetlands and a survey of morphology and depth of puddles and ponds, in order to better calibrate the interventions. Later, the following Interventions will be performed in order to realize a restyling of wetlands aiming toimprove habitat quality and hence to increase biodiversity:

  •  we will modify the water supply network to avoid the landfill of the areas that otherwise will disappear;
  • we will create new little puddles for amphibians reproduction: these animals are threatened due to the presence of fishes that are voracious eggs predators in both large and small lakes; therefore, little puddles will be more suitable for amphibians reproduction;
  • we will increase plant biodiversity, removing not-native and invasive plant species and planting new native and more fitting ones.

The areas where we are going to work will be also equipped to host visitors and school, we will involve school children in educational activities where they will have the opportunity to become little researchers.

At the end of our interventions, we will evaluate the results through surveys of vegetation, fauna and water quality. When the project will end, thanks to a network agreement between partners and trained volunteers, all the areas will be monitored and maintained in good conditions.
