Maasai women play a key role in looking after kids, elders and disables. Nevertheless they are still the most vulnerable to social, environmental and economic shocks.
The lives of Maasai people revolve around livestock, but the lack of work opportunities which are alternative to livestock keeping contributes to the intensification of poverty and leads the women of the community towards unsustainable practices such as deforestation for charcoal production.

Social rights and new income-generating activities

The project aims at improving the livelihood of 5.000 Maasai women who still lack formal education, basic human rights, have no political representation and rely entirely on subsistence informal economies.
We are committed to enhance women’s skills to increase their employability and income generation activities. Women will also be trained to learn basic English and marketing techniques in three sectors: dry meat, honey, handicrafts.
One of the main project’s goal is to guarantee the access to socio-economic services. Vulnerable women will be supported in the establishment of 8 Member Based Organizations (MBOs) aimed at boosting their social rights and economic empowerment. Meanwhile, 8 pilot experiences of Community Social Funds managed by VICOBAs (Village Community Bank Groups) and 8 Information Points will be set up within local authorities’ facilities. The goal is to enhance social protection through social funds, which will facilitate women’s access to basic, essential social services and mitigate their exposure to risks.
We will also strengthen 25 existing Traditional Women Groups to increase and disseminate awareness on human rights, land and customary rights.
Through campaigns, mobilization and community activation, the project wants to foster a cultural change: to make people, especially women, aware of their key role as members of their family and society.
