This project addressed specifically non-state workers in Myanmar.
The main aim was to empower them and increase their participation in poverty-reducing strategies in the context of sustainable environmental development.
To solve the problem of environmental degradation in the country, reducing deforestation and strengthening the capabilities of civil society in the sustainable management of natural resources are vital steps.

More effective action for conservation

Co-management of the project and its specific activities by BANCA personnel strengthens this organisation’s ability to plan and manage programmes for safeguarding biodiversity and sustainable development.
On a more general level, through this project the opportunities and capabilities of the various actors in civil society in Myanmar to promote sustainable environmental development programmes increase also due to local initiatives for sustainable environmental development at community level.

The project also includes analysis of the state of biodiversity resources in the country and in two key areas, with the development of a monitoring and assessment programme (the resulting data is organised in an archive that’s easily consulted).
Oikos will disseminate the project’s results, using them in Myanmar and the rest of the world, as well as work to raise awareness among people living in Lombardy of the issues of safeguarding biodiversity and sustainable development in Myanmar and the close interconnection between countries in the North and South of the world.
All the information has been published in the book “Myanmar Protected areas, context, current status and challenges” which presents information on the protected areas in Myanmar for the first time.
